Hearing From God pt.1

Firstly, Happy new month! 🎊🎊

May this month be full of God’s Grace & Favor, and may your steps be ordered in Jesus Name, Amen.

I want to believe that you are well rested from the much-deserved holiday the previous week and also this past weekend.

To be honest, I needed a break, all of us did.

Having said that, let’s get right into today’s post.

The first thing I want you to know is that God wants to be heard even more than we want to hear him.

Yes! He desires to be in constant communication and communion with us at all times.

As believers, we must know that God is always speaking to us and we just need to listen as He speaks.

So, in this first part of this topic, I will be highlighting four (4) ways that God speaks to us.

1. Dreams.

One very clear example of this is in the book of Genesis chapter 20 vs 3.

But that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are a dead man, for that woman you have taken is already married!” — Genesis 20 vs 3 NLT

Abimelech had this dream when he took Sarah, Abraham’s wife to be his wife.

What Abimelech didn’t know was that Sarah was Abraham’s wife because Abraham had said that Sarah was his sister. However, God revealed it to Abimelech in a dream.

Abraham introduced his wife, Sarah, by saying, “She is my sister.” So King Abimelech of Gerar sent for Sarah and had her brought to him at his palace. — Genesis 20 vs 2 NLT

So, dreams are one of the numerous ways God speaks to his people. He gives directions, instructions, and sometimes even warnings.

2. Scriptures (The Word of God)

God always uses His word to speak to us. His word is His voice and He is His word.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God — John chp 1 vs 1 KJV

God’s word is a complete instructional manual for every believer. It is a compass that directs us on how to live, what to do, and which way to go.

In Psalms 119 vs 105, the writer says that God’s word is a lamp to guide their feet and a light for their path.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path — Psalm 119 vs 105 NLT

So, the daily studying of God’s word helps our hearts to listen to what He has to say and our hands to do as He has said.

3. Visions.

Visions and dreams have some similarities.

Whilst in dreams, you have to be asleep to have one, in the case of visions, you don’t have to be asleep. You can be conscious and have a vision.

And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: — Daniel 10 vs 4–5 KJV

Here, Daniel speaks about receiving a vision from God and he was fully awake while the vision came. He was with other people but he alone saw the vision.

And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. — Daniel 10 vs 7 KJV

Daniel had been waiting on the Lord. He had fasted and rid himself of anything that pertained to the flesh so that his spirit was conscious and sensitive for when the Lord would speak and give His word.

In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. — Daniel 10 vs 2–3 KJV

Daniel had been waiting to receive, to hear what God would say, and indeed, he received. God spoke to him through a vision.

4. Peace.

Sometimes God doesn’t speak with words (in a sense) rather, He gives us peace.

I’ll share a story with you.

In March of last year, I was preparing to embark on a compulsory one-year service aka NYSC (National Youth Service Corps).

When my posting came out, I was posted to Abia State. Before that, I had been praying for direction for where I would be posted.

When I saw Abia state, I just felt this internal peace. I felt so at peace and I knew for sure that God’s hand was in it.

Now, peace isn’t the absence of storms, trials, or tribulations. Rather, peace is that Jesus is with us in the storm and any trial or challenge we may face or are currently facing.

Jesus says in the book of John that He has given us peace.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. — John 14 vs 27 KJV

So, we’re assured that He’s with us always.

As I conclude, I must tell you that hearing God’s voice is not limited to the above-listed examples.

The most important thing about hearing God’s voice is to always expect to hear.

Be willing to hear always because God is more willing to speak than we are ready to hear.

Jeremiah 29 vs 13 says, “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me”

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. — Jeremiah 29 vs 13 KJV

So, practice looking for God, seek him so that you will find Him, even for the seemingly small things.

Don’t wait till you have to make a life-changing decision before you seek to hear God’s voice or what He has to say.

Also, note that sometimes, we may have to stay in waiting so we must be patient as we seek God’s face.

I will leave you with this scripture from the book of Psalms.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way — Psalms 37 vs 23 KJV

So, this week, as you go about your activities, practice hearing from God. Be intentional about listening and waiting, He will speak to you.
